Alpe Adria Gravel TransAlp 2025

Embark on a 5-day gravel bike adventure with professional guide Martin Budweiser through three countries, all the way to the steep cliffs of the Adriatic. We’ll connect mountains, lakes, remote valleys, culinary delights, and a unique gravel experience across Austria, Slovenia, and Italy, covering 305 km and 4500 meters of elevation.

What makes this journey unique is the daily change in landscapes. Starting with the Carinthian lakes and the Nockberge mountains, we’ll reach the limestone peaks of the Triglav National Park. From there, solitary paths through the Kolovrat ridges lead us into the lush vineyards and rolling hills of Collio, eventually bringing us to the Karst region near Grignano, where we’ll arrive at the steep cliffs of the Adriatic.

Quality over quantity, with a maximum of 10 participants, guided by a certified gravel guide, and perfect all-around service—this is our trademark.

Route

Stage 1 – Along and over turquoise lakes
The tour starts off leisurely with a warm-up ride to the southern shore of Lake Millstatt. From there, we begin the climb towards Lake Weißensee, with a total of about 700 meters of elevation gain. The following boat ride across the turquoise-blue Weißensee offers relaxation and enjoyment, and is certainly one of the day’s highlights. Upon reaching Techendorf, we bike uphill once more to the Kreuzberg, before descending through idyllic landscapes to the day’s destination in Hermagor.

Stage 2 – The First Border Crossing

The day begins again leisurely. Following the Gail River, we bike 20 kilometers downstream to Feistritz. A few kilometers later, we find ourselves in Italy, where we visit the old train station in Tarvis before tackling the main climb of the tour. Just before reaching Passo Predil, the highest point of the Gravel-Alpeadria, a short break at Lake Predil is in order. A refreshing dip in the cool water toughens us up and provides a literal refreshment. Upon reaching the pass, we enter Slovenia. The final descent of 700 meters over nearly 20 kilometers ends in the town center of Bovec..

Stage 3 – The Soča Valley – Unique and Impressive

Stage 3 is all about the Soča River. The turquoise river accompanies us throughout the day. The wildest section of the Soča, between Bovec and Kobarid, attracts both water sports enthusiasts and cyclists to this beautiful valley. A rough section of the trail requires our full attention – we may need to push our bikes for a few meters. After taking the obligatory photos at the famous Napoleon Bridge, we continue following the Soča River to Tolmin and on to the day’s destination in Ciginj.

Stage 4 – Across the Border into Italy’s Vineyards
Once again, we follow the Soča River for about 10 km before heading uphill to Kombreško. We refill our water reserves at a well, then ride downhill to the border river between Slovenia and Italy, the "Idrija" or "Judrio." We cross between the two countries several times before ultimately choosing Italy. In Prepotto, we arrive at the renowned wine region of Collio (known as "Brda" on the Slovenian side). We may even have time for a wine tasting on our way to Gorizia..

Stage 5 – The Karst, Traces of World War I, and Swaying Boats in the Harbor
After a short warm-up, we begin the final day with the climb to Monte San Michele, where we take a look back at the dark history of the region. Cannons and trenches serve as reminders of the tragic years of World War I. However, this summit also has its positive side – it’s where we first catch sight of the Adriatic Sea, the final destination of our journey. The varied descent leads us to Lake Doberdo and onward into the Karst Mountains, north of the Adriatic. The ups and downs here will test our strength and endurance once more before we finally reach our goal: the picturesque harbor of Grignano, right by the sea.

We offer this tour exclusively with a guide, as simply following GPS tracks is not always the ideal solution. Only with a guide and support vehicle can we respond to challenges, meet participants’ requests, and provide a high-quality experience. The route often changes, as some paths may be impassable in wet conditions, or riding at high altitudes may be unsuitable in very cold weather. Environmental factors can also lead to changes in the route, as well as in the total distance and elevation gain.

With conviction – Your guide Martin and mastermind Hannes :)
