UNESCO biosphere reserve
CARINTHIA'S "NATURAL WORLD HERITAGE"
In total, the Nockberge biosphere reserve in the south of Austria stretches across the four Carinthian municipalities Bad Kleinkirchheim, Ebene Reichenau, Krems in Kärnten and Radenthein.
In the year 2012, the Salzburger Lungau and the Carinthian Nockberge were included in the list of UNESCO biosphere reserves, together forming the largest biosphere reserve in Austria.
The biosphere reserve is divided into three principal zones: the maintenance zone below the tree line, the nature zone above the tree line and the development zone with the settlement area.
People in the Nockberge have been living in harmony with nature for centuries and are dedicated to the preservation and maintenance of the natural and cultivated landscape. Their aim is especially to preserve its originality as far as possible or even fully. They also want to protect the flora and fauna and their natural habitats, thereby offering you an impressive nature experience when hiking in Carinthia.
